Haemoglobin shows whether you are anaemic today, while ferritin shows how much iron your body has stored. You can feel tired with normal haemoglobin but low ferritin, so check both before choosing an iron supplement in Singapore. A low MCV is not always caused by low iron.
Feeling drained by 3pm, even after your usual Coffee? Many people buy an iron supplement in Singapore based on tiredness alone, but the real answer sits in your blood test report. Three numbers tell you whether iron is actually your gap: ferritin, haemoglobin and MCV. Here is what each one means, and how to choose and time iron properly.
What Do Ferritin, Haemoglobin and MCV Mean on Your Blood Test?
Think of iron like money. Ferritin is your savings account, haemoglobin is the cash each red blood cell spends carrying oxygen, and MCV is the average size of those cells. When iron runs short, your body drains savings first, which is why haemoglobin can look fine for months while reserves quietly empty.
| Marker | What it measures | What a low result can mean |
|---|---|---|
| Ferritin | Stored iron | Reserves are running down |
| Haemoglobin (Hb) | Oxygen carrier in each red blood cell | Anaemia is already present |
| MCV | Average red blood cell size | Iron deficiency or thalassaemia trait |

What Counts as Low Ferritin?
Lab ranges vary, so check the flag on your own report. As a guide, a Singapore study classed plasma ferritin of 30 μg/L or above as iron sufficiency, 15 to under 30 μg/L as modest depletion, and under 15 μg/L as severe depletion. When you ask for a ferritin test, request the actual number, not just "normal".
Can You Have Low Ferritin Even if Your Haemoglobin Is Normal?
Yes. This is called iron deficiency without anemia. Your blood count looks clean, yet you may feel tired, lose focus or get breathless climbing HDB stairs. For many women, low ferritin is the missing piece when energy support from sleep and diet is not enough.
It is common locally. In a Singapore cohort of 985 women, 67.0% had modest and 6.8% had severe iron depletion in the early third trimester of pregnancy, and the researchers found that lacking iron-containing supplementation raised the odds of depletion. (BMC Public Health, 2019)
Does a Low MCV Always Mean You Need an Iron Supplement?
No. Small red blood cells can also come from thalassaemia trait, a common inherited condition across Southeast Asia. In thalassaemia minor, iron and ferritin levels are normal, and iron supplements do not help. If your MCV is low but ferritin is normal, ask your doctor about thalassaemia screening first. A high MCV points elsewhere, such as low vitamin B12, which our guide on what you need to know about vitamin B12 covers.
"Read ferritin, haemoglobin and MCV together, never one number on its own. That single habit stops most people from buying the wrong supplement."
— ARK+ Wellness TeamHow Much Iron Do You Need in Singapore, and What Changes With Menopause?
Singapore's Recommended Dietary Allowances come from the Ministry of Health and Health Promotion Board. (TTSH iron guide)
| Group | Daily iron (RDA) |
|---|---|
| Men, 18 and above | 8 mg |
| Women, 18 to under 60 | 18 mg |
| Women, 60 and above | 8 mg |
| Pregnant women | 27 mg |

For menopause support, this matters. Once periods stop, iron loss ends and needs usually fall, so a post-menopausal woman who eats well may not need extra iron at all. Test before topping up. Those who often need more include women with heavy periods, regular blood donors and vegetarians. If you follow a plant-based wellness routine, pair tofu, spinach or lentils with vitamin C at the same meal.
How Do You Choose the Right Iron Supplement in Singapore?
Check Elemental Iron, Not Compound Weight
A label may list a large "ferrous sulfate" figure, but only about 20% of that is actual iron. Look for the elemental iron amount.
Pick a Gentle Form You Will Actually Take

| Iron form | Absorption | Stomach comfort |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrous sulfate | Good | Often causes constipation |
| Ferrous bisglycinate | Good | Usually gentler |
| Heme iron | Best | Gentle, less affected by food |
| Liquid iron drinks | Varies | Easy if you dislike tablets |
Consistency beats strength. If tablets are a struggle, a drinkable option like ARK+ Iron Vitality Energy Essence Drink fits easily into a daily routine for red blood cell and energy support.
What Stops Your Body From Absorbing Iron?
The biggest local culprit is Coffee or Tea with lunch. Tannins bind to iron, so leave one to two hours between them and your supplement. Calcium from milk or yoghurt also reduces absorption. Vitamin C does the opposite, so take iron with guava or orange, or alongside a B complex with vitamin C.
When Should You See a Doctor First?
See your GP if you are a man or post-menopausal woman with unexplained low iron, as it can signal hidden blood loss. Never take iron "just in case", because excess iron builds up over time. Ask specifically for a ferritin test, not only a full blood count.
